Prevent Paper Piles:
- Manage Mail Immediately
Set up a trash can/recycling bin/shredder all in one place and take a few minutes to get rid of the junk mail as soon as you come into your home or office. This allows you to focus only on the important papers that need action.
- Five and Done
Act immediately on any paper item that arrives in your home or office that can be handled in 5 minutes or less. Get the small stuff out of the way quickly so you have more time later for the big stuff.
- Stop the Daily Deluge
Take a small amount of time now to remove yourself from junk mail, catalog, and other mailing lists, both paper and electronic. The time you spend now will gain you more time in the future.
Prevent Clutter Piles:
- Keep Clutter Out
Choose wisely – anything that is allowed to take up space in your home or office should be useful, beautiful or both.
- Have a Donation Station
Designate a spot in your home where you regularly place items that can be donated.
- Make a Place for Everything
Assign a home to all items in your living and working spaces so that you can locate what you need quickly and put it away easily.
- Put It Where You Use It
Store items in the place where they are used most often. Use your most easily accessible storage for items that are used most frequently.
- Maintain Daily
Spend just a short amount of time every day putting things back in their designated homes. Make decisions about what should stay and what should go on a regular basis. Take 10 minutes each and every day to sort your mail and get your paper processed and into its proper place. Doing a little bit every day is much more efficient than having sporadic big clean-ups. You will save time, money, and reduce your stress when you can find what you need, when you need it, with a minimum of effort!
“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
– Antoine de Saint-Exupery
